The Forbidden Island
Cinque Island, actually two islands (North and South Cinque) connected by a sandbar, is one of Andaman's most beautiful but restricted destinations. Located 26 km from Port Blair, it requires special permits and is open only for day visits.
Permit Requirements
Due to its ecological sensitivity and proximity to tribal reserves: 1. Foreigners: Restricted Area Permit (RAP) with specific endorsement 2. Indians: Protected Area Permit (PAP) required 3. Process: Apply through registered tour operators 7-10 days in advance 4. Group travel: Minimum 4 persons usually required 5. Day visits only: No overnight stay permitted
Underwater Paradise
1. Coral Gardens
Some of the healthiest coral reefs in Andaman with hard and soft corals in vibrant colors.
2. Marine Diversity
Regular sightings: reef sharks, eagle rays, moray eels, octopus, and numerous tropical fish species.
3. Wreck Diving
Several small wrecks attract marine life and offer interesting dive sites.
4. Visibility
Exceptional visibility (20-40 meters) due to protected status and limited visitors.
The Sandbar Experience
At low tide, a natural sandbar emerges connecting the two islands. Walking across this temporary land bridge with water on both sides is a magical experience. The sandbar disappears during high tide.
